Does your Portland area home have a Fire Evacuation plan in place?

9/5/2019 (Permalink)

Always be prepared for a fire in your home.

This month, SERVPRO of NW Portland’s Sales and Marketing team taught a class called “Property Fire Damage Restoration for Loss Control” as a continuing education course for insurance agents in the local Portland area. During that class, we found that majority of homeowners and renters have an idea on what they would do if a fire occurs, but many of them do not have an actual plan. As Fire Restoration Professionals, we believe it is important to take a few minutes to visualize and formulate a Fire Evacuation Plan to be prepared for the worst case scenario.

An evacuation plan would include:

  • Be ready to report fire to emergency responders.
  • Be aware of emergency exits – always have at least two ways out, including windows and doors.
  • Check smoke alarms – ensure that they are properly placed and working.
  • Involve children in planning – consider having your children help create a fire evacuation plan.
  • Choose a meeting spot – decide a meeting place near the property, such as a neighbor’s house, mailbox, or stop sign, where residents can meet at after evacuating. Agree to not go back in the house after you leave.
  • Practice and review the plan regularly.

You can be one step ahead when the unexpected may occur. After the fire is out, reach out to your local SERVPRO to mitigate and restore you home!
